What Emotion Is Running Your Life?

Your inner state is shaping more than your mood. It’s shaping what you create, tolerate, pursue and become.

There’s an idea I came across recently that stayed with me. That some emotions expand us. And others quietly start running the whole show. Not because “negative emotions are bad.” We are human. We will feel fear. Jealousy. Anger. Grief. Envy. Doubt.

But there is a difference between feeling an emotion and building a home inside it. And that difference matters. Especially when you are trying to create something. A career. A business. A relationship. A new version of yourself.

The 7 emotions that move us forward

Napoleon Hill wrote about seven major positive emotions: Desire. Faith. Love. Sex. Enthusiasm. Romance. Hope.

Interesting list, isn’t it?

Especially sex and romance sitting comfortably next to faith and hope. But perhaps that’s the point. We often try to create our lives purely through logic. Plans. Calendars. Strategies. Five-year goals. Meanwhile, some of the most powerful forces behind human behaviour are much less tidy.

Desire makes us move. Faith makes us continue before there is evidence. Love reminds us what actually matters. Sexual energy makes us feel alive, magnetic and creative. Enthusiasm gives ideas momentum. Romance allows us to imagine life as something bigger than survival. Hope lets us see beyond whatever is happening today. These are not soft emotions. They are fuel.

But then there is the other list:

Fear. Jealousy. Hatred. Revenge. Greed. Superstition. Anger.

Again, none of these make you a bad person. They make you a person. The problem begins when one of them becomes the lens through which you make every decision.

Fear says: Don’t leave yet.

Jealousy says: Why them and not me?

Greed says: More will finally make me enough.

Anger says: Protect yourself before anyone gets close.

And suddenly we are not consciously creating our life anymore. We are reacting to it.

Self-awareness changes the question.

Instead of asking: “How do I stop feeling this?”

Try asking: “What emotion do I want to lead from?”

That is a very different question. Because emotional awareness is not about becoming endlessly positive. I don’t believe in forcing yourself to feel grateful when you are furious. Or pretending everything is wonderful while your nervous system is screaming otherwise.

It is about noticing what is present without automatically handing it the steering wheel.

You can feel fear and still choose curiosity.

You can feel envy and let it reveal desire.

You can feel anger and turn it into a boundary.

You can feel uncertainty and still make space for hope.

That, to me, is emotional intelligence.

A small experiment for this week

Pick one emotion from the first list. Not seven. One. Maybe you need more desire. Maybe life has become very responsible lately and you need some romance. Maybe you know exactly what you want but have lost faith in your ability to make it happen. Maybe you desperately need enthusiasm again.

Now ask yourself:

What would this emotion look like in action?

If I chose desire, what would I finally admit I want?

If I chose love, what would I stop tolerating?

If I chose enthusiasm, what would I create purely because it excites me?

If I chose hope, what possibility would I allow myself to believe in again?

Then do one thing from there. Not because the uncomfortable emotions disappeared. But because they don’t get to make every decision.

Perhaps we become what we emotionally rehearse.

We talk a lot about habits in terms of behaviour. Wake up earlier. Exercise. Journal. Work harder. Scroll less. But emotions can become habits too. Fear can become familiar. So can pessimism. So can desire. So can hope. And maybe part of creating a different life is deliberately practising the emotions that belong in it before that life fully exists. Not fake positivity. Emotional direction.

Because the inner state you repeatedly return to will inevitably affect what you notice, what you attempt, what you accept and what you create.

So I’ll leave you with one question:

Which emotion has been dominating your life lately and which one would you rather practise instead?
